HB 1473 Summary

• Exempts firearms lawfully stored in locked motor vehicles from school property firearm restrictions, including firearms locked in trunks, glove compartments, or stored out of plain sight in locked vehicles.

• Removes provision allowing employers to adopt policies prohibiting employee possession of firearms or ammunition on school property or school buses in violation of student discipline and firearm possession laws.

• Redefines "school property" for firearm possession laws (IC 35-47-9) to exclude grounds adjacent to and owned or rented in common with school buildings, creating a distinction between general school property definitions and those applicable to firearm regulations.

• Requires property used by a school for a school function to meet three conditions to be regulated: used exclusively by the school, not accessible to the general public during the function, and posted with notice at each entrance.

• Effective July 1, 2013.
