HB 1533 Summary

• Only physicians licensed under IC 25-22.5 may administer abortion-inducing drugs, and only when following the FDA-approved drug label protocol.

• Physicians must examine the pregnant woman in person, document gestational age and intrauterine location of fetus, provide a copy of the drug label, and schedule a follow-up appointment approximately 14 days after administration to confirm pregnancy termination via ultrasound and assess bleeding.

• Physicians who administer abortion-inducing drugs must report any adverse events (including death, life-threatening occurrence, hospitalization, disability, birth defects, or required medical intervention) to the FDA and Indiana's medical licensing board within 3 days of learning of the event.

• Intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly violating these requirements constitutes a Class A misdemeanor, though pregnant women cannot be assessed penalties; violators may also face disciplinary sanctions and civil liability.

• Effective July 1, 2013.
