HB 1577 Summary

• Eliminates the Indiana charter school board effective May 15, 2013 (retroactively).

• Transfers sponsorship of charter schools previously authorized by the charter school board to the mayor of Indianapolis (consolidated city executive) if the school is in Marion County, is not virtual, and the mayor accepts sponsorship.

• Transfers charter school sponsorship to Ball State University if the mayor does not accept sponsorship or if the school does not meet the criteria for mayoral sponsorship.

• Removes the charter board as an eligible sponsor category and adds it from the list of entities that can collect administrative fees from charter schools.

• Successor sponsors assume all powers and duties the charter school board had under law as of May 14, 2013, operating charter schools under previously approved proposals until charter expiration, amendment, or termination.
