Senate Bill No. 187 Summary

• Amends the definition of "child care ministry" in IC 12-7-2-28.8 to require religious organizations to have a recognized creed and form of worship, established places of worship, and regular congregation and religious services.

• Adds requirement that the principal purpose of the religious organization must be the study or advancement of religion.

• Adds requirement that net earnings of the religious organization cannot inure to the benefit of any private individual or shareholder.

• Provides a one-year transition period (July 1, 2013 to July 1, 2014) for existing registered child care ministries that do not meet the new definition to either comply with the new requirements, become licensed under IC 12-17.2-4 or IC 12-17.2-5, or discontinue operating as a child care ministry.

• Effective July 1, 2013.
