Senate Bill 191 Summary

• Schools placed in the highest academic performance category are not required to conduct 180 instructional days if they instead provide equivalent instructional hours (900 hours for grades 1-6 or 1,080 hours for grades 7-12).

• Public schools cannot begin the school year before the Tuesday after Labor Day (first Monday in September) or end after June 10, starting with the 2015-2016 school year.

• School governing bodies may establish earlier start dates or later end dates for year-round schools, balanced calendar schools, and schools coordinating calendars with postsecondary institutions or large employers, if approved through public hearings and majority vote.

• Governing bodies may extend any school's end date past June 10 if approved through public hearings and majority vote.

• These restrictions apply to collective bargaining agreements and contracts negotiated or renewed after June 30, 2015, and do not apply to nonpublic schools.
