Senate Bill 295 Summary

• Requires judges of city and town courts to be attorneys in good standing admitted to practice law in Indiana, effective July 1, 2013.

• Allows current judges serving on June 30, 2013 who are not attorneys to continue serving only for the remainder of their existing term.

• Increases civil jurisdiction limits for city and town courts in Lake County and second class cities from $3,000 to $6,000 for civil actions and landlord-tenant cases.

• Grants city and town courts original and concurrent jurisdiction with circuit and superior courts over emergency possessory actions between landlords and tenants.

• Designates city courts in second class cities as courts of record.
