Senate Bill 410 Summary

• Requires each state educational institution to establish a "Combat to College Program" that creates a positive educational environment for veteran students and recognizes skills and experiences from military service.

• Mandates state educational institutions provide centralized services for veteran students including admissions, registration, and financial administration; reasonable fitness facility accommodations for disabled veterans; academic and career counseling; specialized mental health services for disabled veterans or those with PTSD; and job search assistance during enrollment and for two years post-graduation.

• Requires each state educational institution to designate a program coordinator responsible for developing veteran support programs, training staff on veteran issues, coordinating with federal and state veterans' agencies, and establishing internship and employment programs for veteran students.

• Establishes a hiring preference policy for veteran students employed by state educational institutions, provided the veteran has received an honorable discharge (or is currently serving) and is enrolled at least half-time.

• Requires state educational institutions to grant postsecondary credit toward degrees or certifications for military training when the American Council of Education recommends credit be awarded.
