Senate Bill 503 Summary

• Allows emergency medical technicians, advanced emergency medical technicians, and paramedics employed by law enforcement or emergency medical services agencies to practice tactical emergency medicine if they complete an accredited training program.

• Tactical emergency medicine providers may retrieve victims and provide field medical treatment during violent confrontations, operating within their scope of training and under a supervising medical director's approval.

• Requires law enforcement agencies and emergency medical services agencies that employ tactical medicine providers to be certified by the emergency medical services commission.

• The emergency medical services commission must adopt emergency rules by August 31, 2013, incorporating existing policy criteria and core curriculum requirements from prior commission approvals (nonrule policy statement EMS-02-2002 and September 13, 2007 curriculum standards).

• Effective July 1, 2013; emergency rules expire on the earlier date of permanent rule adoption or June 30, 2014.
