Senate Bill 601 Summary

• Replaces Indiana's four-level felony classification system with a six-level felony system, reassigning penalty levels to existing crimes effective July 1, 2014.

• Consolidates the crime of criminal deviate conduct into rape and repeals laws concerning criminal deviate conduct, carjacking, failure of a student athlete to disclose recruitment, and credit restricted felons.

• Updates felony classifications across numerous Indiana Code sections including election crimes, tax violations, fraud, gambling offenses, alcoholic beverage violations, and vehicle identification crimes.

• Makes technical corrections and conforming amendments throughout Indiana Code titles addressing criminal law and related administrative matters.

• Urges the legislative council to evaluate criminal law statutes in IC 7.1 and IC 9 and recommend modifications to the general assembly.
