Senate Joint Resolution No. 8 - Marriage

• Proposes an amendment to Article 1, Section 38 of the Indiana Constitution to define marriage as valid only between one man and one woman.
• Prohibits Indiana from recognizing any legal status that is identical or substantially similar to marriage for unmarried individuals.
• This amendment was previously agreed to by the 117th General Assembly and requires agreement by the 118th General Assembly (2013) to proceed.
• Amendment must be ratified by a majority of Indiana voters in a statewide referendum to become effective.
• Referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Legislative Procedure on January 7, 2013.
