HEA 1123 Summary

• Creates new Chapter 13.4 of Indiana Code establishing restrictions on abortion coverage in accident and sickness insurance policies, effective July 1, 2014

• Prohibits accident and sickness insurance policies issued, delivered, amended, or renewed after December 31, 2014 from covering abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or when abortion is necessary to prevent death or substantial irreversible impairment of a major bodily function

• Allows insurers to offer abortion coverage through optional riders or endorsements to policies

• Applies same abortion coverage restrictions to health maintenance organizations providing basic healthcare services under group or individual contracts entered into, delivered, amended, or renewed after December 31, 2014

• Excludes specified insurance types from requirements including accident-only, credit, dental, vision, Medicare supplement, long-term care, and disability income insurance
