HB 1233 Summary

• Amends Indiana Code IC 20-26 to modify the definition of "expanded criminal history check" to include verification of applicant identity and searches of all names associated with the applicant.

• Requires school corporations, charter schools, and accredited nonpublic schools to adopt a policy requiring employees with direct, ongoing contact with children to obtain an expanded criminal history check every five years beginning after June 30, 2014.

• Limits expanded criminal history checks to one occurrence per five-year period per applicant or employee.

• Establishes that applicants are responsible for all costs associated with obtaining expanded criminal history checks and may be required to provide fingerprints and answer questions about their criminal history.

• Effective July 1, 2014.
