HB 1273 Summary

• Creates the Indiana missing and unidentified persons unit within the attorney general's office to replace the Indiana clearinghouse for information on missing children and missing endangered adults.

• Expands missing persons protections to include all people of any age, not just children and endangered adults, including those reported missing to law enforcement or believed to be victims of criminal confinement.

• Requires the state police superintendent to establish a DNA database and mandates that the missing and unidentified persons unit have access to all information in the Indiana DNA database.

• Establishes Amber alert and Silver alert programs to be operated by the unit, allowing transmission of information about abducted or missing persons to broadcasters and electronic billboard operators.

• Effective date: July 1, 2014.
