House Bill 1283 Summary

• Requires public works contracts for school building construction, reconstruction, repair, alteration, or retrofitting valued at $1,000,000 or more to design buildings with the goal of achieving Silver certification under LEED for Schools, Two Globes certification under Green Globes rating system, or an equivalent American National Standards Institute-accredited rating system.

• Applies to buildings owned by or leased to school corporations for contracts entered into after December 31, 2014.

• Specifies that for reconstruction, repair, alteration, or retrofitting projects, plans must be designed to achieve Silver certification under LEED for Existing Buildings (rather than LEED for Schools).

• Requires school corporations to consider historic or aesthetic qualities of the building and availability of local materials when selecting plan or specification elements to achieve certification.

• Permits the optional use of Indiana hardwood lumber if practicable in meeting certification requirements.

• Effective July 1, 2014.
