HB 1293 - Massage Therapist Licensing Summary

• Requires individuals to obtain a state license (rather than optional certification) from the board of massage therapy to practice massage therapy for compensation in Indiana, effective July 1, 2014.

• Establishes licensure requirements including minimum age (18), high school diploma, 500+ hours of supervised training, passage of an approved examination, and professional liability insurance.

• Removes professional association membership requirements for board appointments and allows the board to approve massage therapy school curricula consistent with national educational standards.

• Allows temporary unlicensed practice by out-of-state licensed practitioners during emergencies or charity/educational/athletic events, and by enrolled students completing clinical requirements.

• Exempts state massage therapy licensing law from local ordinances and regulations, except for local zoning requirements and occupational license fees; automatically transitions individuals certified as of June 30, 2014 to licensed status.
