HB 1333 Summary

• Replaces the term "motorized bicycle" with "moped" and repeals the term "motor scooter" throughout Indiana Code, effective after December 31, 2014.

• Requires mopeds to be registered with the bureau of motor vehicles with a registration fee equal to a motorcycle ($17.30), with $7 allocated to the motorcycle operator safety education fund.

• Establishes operational restrictions for mopeds: maximum speed of 35 mph on non-state highways and 45 mph on state highways (or posted limit, whichever is lower); must be operated in the right-hand lane except when turning left; cannot carry more persons than designed.

• Mopeds are not required to be titled with the bureau and are exempt from financial responsibility insurance requirements, but are subject to county motor vehicle excise taxes.

• Requires dealers selling at least 12 mopeds per year after December 31, 2014, to register as dealers with the secretary of state.
