• Deletes provisions in Indiana Code 3-5-9 that prohibited volunteer firefighters from assuming or holding elected offices in units that receive fire protection services from their department.

• Allows volunteer firefighters to hold elected office in units other than those receiving fire protection services from their department.

• Permits volunteer firefighters holding elected office on January 1, 2013 to continue serving until their current term expires, with the restriction lasting until July 1, 2017.

• Allows affected volunteer firefighters to run for reelection and hold the same elected office they held on January 1, 2013.

• Becomes effective upon passage and declares an emergency for the act.
