Senate Bill 199 Summary

• Grants up to 6 years of military service credit in the teachers' retirement fund for members' past active duty service, subject to specified conditions including honorable discharge and 10 years of in-state service.

• Grants up to 6 years of military service credit to members of the 1977 police officers' and firefighters' pension and disability fund under similar conditions, with member and employer contribution requirements.

• For World War II veterans, military service credit may be used in benefit computations after June 30, 2014; for all other members, credit may be used only after June 30, 2016.

• Allows members to purchase up to 2 additional years of military service credit by making actuarially-determined contributions to their respective funds.

• Effective July 1, 2014, with provisions applying to members regardless of retirement date before or after that effective date.
