Senate Bill 256 Summary

• Requires each school corporation to include instruction on the societal impact of teenage pregnancy in addition to existing AIDS education curricula.

• Mandates the Office of the Secretary of Family and Social Services and State Department of Health provide annual data by June 1 on Medicaid recipients under 18 who gave birth and the number of teenage births in Indiana to the Department of Education.

• Renames the AIDS advisory council to the AIDS and teenage pregnancy advisory council and expands its duties to identify, study, and make recommendations on educational materials concerning teenage pregnancy's societal impact.

• Requires the Department of Education to determine the number of students who were pregnant or gave birth and graduated each academic school year, and include collected data in educational materials.

• Modifies marriage license information requirements so that material distributed by circuit court clerks must be approved by the renamed advisory council and address both AIDS and teenage pregnancy.

• Effective date: July 1, 2014.
