SB 264 Summary

• Establishes the "Choices for Teachers" program to provide stipends to qualified teachers who transfer to low-performing schools.

• Defines eligible schools as public schools (including charter schools) placed in either of the two lowest performance categories under IC 20-31-8-4.

• Eligible teachers must have received a "highly effective" or "effective" rating on their most recent performance evaluation and must have been employed at a non-charter public school or charter school before applying to transfer to an eligible school.

• Eligible teachers receive annual stipends at the end of each of the first two school years of employment at an eligible school, conditional upon legislative appropriation.

• School corporations and charter schools cannot pay eligible teachers less than comparable teachers already employed by the same organization.
