SB 278 Summary

• The state school bus committee shall adopt rules requiring each new school bus operated by a school corporation to display the school district's name on the back in black letters 4-6 inches high.

• School bus drivers and prospective drivers must obtain a physical examination certificate from an individual registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

• School corporations determine how the certified medical examiner is chosen and who pays for the physical examination, replacing the prior requirement that drivers choose and pay for examinations with a state-licensed physician.

• The bill becomes effective July 1, 2014.
