Senate Bill 355 Summary

• Reestablishes the state board of education after December 31, 2016, consisting of the state superintendent, nine members elected from congressional districts, and three appointed members (a teacher, principal, and school superintendent)

• Candidates for elected state board positions are nominated at state political party conventions and must have resided in Indiana for 2 years and in their district for 1 year

• Vacancies in elected state board positions are filled by caucus of precinct committeemen from the political party whose precincts are within the affected congressional district

• Makes conforming amendments to election, ethics disclosure, and financial filing requirements to include state board of education candidates and elected members

• Effective date: July 1, 2014, with the new elected board structure taking effect January 1, 2017
