Persons with dystonia experience involuntary muscle contractions causing uncontrollable repetitive or twisting movements of affected body parts.

Dystonia affects 300,000 people in North America and is divided into three groups: idiopathic, genetic, and acquired.

No cure currently exists for dystonia, and symptoms range from mild to severe; few doctors outside specialist groups possess sufficient knowledge to screen and refer patients appropriately.

The Indiana Senate urges all necessary steps be taken to raise awareness about dystonia to achieve significant progress in eliminating the disorder.

Copies of the resolution shall be transmitted to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, Tyler's Hope For A Dystonia Cure, Inc., and the American Dystonia Society.
