HB 1530 Summary

• Adds new Chapter 15 to IC 10-17-15 establishing a voluntary veterans' preference employment policy for private employers effective July 1, 2015

• Defines "veteran" as an individual who served in the United States armed forces, reserves, Indiana Army National Guard, or Indiana Air National Guard and received an honorable discharge

• Permits private employers to voluntarily adopt a written veterans' preference employment policy that gives preference to veterans over other qualified applicants or employees in hiring, promotion, or retention decisions

• Requires veterans' preference policies to be applied uniformly and allows employers to require submission of a DD 214 (Department of Defense Report of Separation form) as proof of veteran status

• Provides that granting veterans' preference does not violate state or local equal employment opportunity laws, and designates the Department of Veterans' Affairs and Department of Workforce Development to assist employers in verifying veteran status while protecting personal privacy
