Indiana General Assembly commemorates the 50th anniversary of astronaut Gus Grissom's Gemini 3 flight on March 23, 1965, recognizing him as a great American hero who represented Indiana with integrity, grace, and honor

Grissom piloted the first manned Gemini mission, a three-orbit mission during which the crew accomplished the first orbital trajectory modifications and the first lifting reentry of a manned spacecraft

Grissom was born April 3, 1926, in Mitchell, Indiana, graduated from Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering, and flew 100 combat missions in Korea before joining NASA in April 1959 as one of the seven original Mercury astronauts

Grissom died tragically on January 27, 1967, in the Apollo 1 spacecraft flash fire during a launch pad test at Cape Kennedy in Florida, along with crew members Ed White and Roger Chaffee
