Gamma Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was chartered in Gary on October 28, 1944, by 15 founding members including Clemette Armstrong and Ruth H. Battle.

The chapter was the first chartered in northwest Indiana and the 20th in the Central Region, and is the only northwest Indiana chapter to have a member on the sorority's directorate.

Since 1944, Gamma Psi Omega has awarded approximately $400,000 in scholarships to Gary area high school seniors for college enrollment and maintains Adopt-a-School partnerships with various schools in the Gary Community School Corporation.

The chapter partners with organizations including the Urban League and Northwest Indiana Money Smart, and operates programs such as "Read & Rise," Young Author's Creativity Program, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts community projects, and financial literacy workshops.

The Indiana House of Representatives recognizes the contributions of Gamma Psi Omega Chapter and directs the Principal Clerk to transmit a copy of the resolution to the chapter's administration.
