SB 143 Summary

• Removes the prohibition preventing nephews and nieces of candidates from serving as precinct election officers, absentee voter board members, absentee ballot counters, or absentee ballot couriers.

• Maintains restrictions on other close relatives including spouses, parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, and aunts/uncles from serving in these election worker roles.

• Preserves the exemption allowing relatives to serve if the candidate is unopposed or seeking office in an election district not encompassing the entire county, provided duties are restricted to prevent influence on ballot casting or counting.

• Updates election worker eligibility requirements in Indiana Code sections 3-6-6-7, 3-6-6-23, 3-11-10-36, 3-11.5-4-22, and 3-11.7-3-2.

• Takes effect July 1, 2015.
