The Indiana General Assembly congratulates and honors former Indiana State Senator Billie Breaux for her decades of public service.

Billie Breaux served as Marion County Auditor for eight years and became the first African-American woman elected to a county-wide office.

Breaux succeeded state legislator Julia Carson in office in 1990 and served in the Indiana State Senate for sixteen years, advocating for educational reform, children, working families, the elderly, and the disabled.

Breaux retired from Indianapolis Public Schools after more than thirty years of service and was instrumental in gaining recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a celebrated holiday.

The Secretary of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to Billie Breaux.
