Michelle Whaley, biological sciences professor at University of Notre Dame, was named the 2014 Indiana Professor of the Year on November 20, 2014, by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

Whaley is the first Notre Dame faculty member to receive the Indiana Professor of the Year award and has served on the teaching faculty since 1993.

For the past sixteen years, Whaley has directed the summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program, which trains students including under-represented minority students in research skills, graduate school preparation, and science ethics.

Whaley serves as faculty coordinator of the Undergraduate Research Program in biological sciences and chair of the undergraduate research committee at Notre Dame, and created the Genetics Mentor program for middle and high school students.

The Indiana Senate directs the Secretary of the Senate to transmit copies of this resolution to Michelle Whaley and Notre Dame President Reverend John I. Jenkins.
