Creates a new definition of "certified athletic official" as a person serving as a referee, umpire, or official at an athletic event who has been certified by a national certification program.

Elevates battery committed against a certified athletic official from a Class B misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor, regardless of whether the offense results in bodily injury.

Amends IC 35-42-2-1 to add certified athletic officials to the list of protected persons under Indiana battery law, placing them in a protected category similar to public safety officials.

Becomes effective July 1, 2016.
