Walter P. Helmke was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on December 28, 1927, and passed away on January 20, 2016.

Served as Prosecuting Attorney of Allen County from 1962 to 1970 and was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 1970, representing parts of Adams, Allen, and DeKalb Counties until 1974.

Held leadership positions including Chairman of the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of IPFW's Community Advisory Council, and Chairman of Parkview Memorial Hospital.

Received IPFW's Ralph E. Broyles Medal, the Allen County Bar Association's first Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Fort Wayne North Side Distinguished Alumni Award.

The Indiana General Assembly memorializes Helmke's life and service, with the Secretary of the Senate directed to transmit copies to his son Paul Helmke (former Fort Wayne mayor) and daughter Marsha Shirk.
