President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the National Historic Preservation Act into law on October 15, 1966, establishing the nation's legal framework for protecting and preserving historic buildings, landscapes, and archaeological discoveries.

Over the past 25 years, 1,600 communities have revitalized historic downtowns and main streets while completing 89,000 historic building rehabilitations.

The National Register of Historic Places now lists more than 80,000 historic properties, with nearly 2,000 located in Indiana.

The Federal Preservation Tax Incentives Program created by the Act is the largest federal program supporting historic preservation and has created millions of jobs and attracted billions in investment.

Indiana leads the nation with its Historic Sites and Structure Inventory, the only identification program that has successfully recorded historic properties in all 92 counties.

The Senate directs the Secretary of the Senate to transmit a copy of this resolution to the Preservation50 Advisory Committee.
