Phi Delta Kappa International's founding chapter was organized at Indiana University in 1906 to serve graduate students and undergraduates in education.

The organization held its first Amalgamation Conference in Indianapolis in 1910 and was incorporated in Indiana in March 1911.

Phi Delta Kappa International moved its headquarters to Bloomington, Indiana in 1954 and operates based on three tenets: leadership, research, and service.

The organization created the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation supporting publications, summer institutes, an education poll, scholarships, study tours, and leadership activities.

The Indiana House of Representatives acknowledges Phi Delta Kappa International's contributions and directs the Principal Clerk to transmit a copy of the resolution to the organization's local chapter.
