Senate Enrolled Act 112 Summary

• Defines "health system" as a parent corporation of one or more hospitals with affiliated entities, or a hospital with affiliated entities, connected through ownership, governance, or membership, effective July 1, 2017.

• Expands the definition of "hospital" under Indiana Code to include health systems, bringing health systems under regulatory requirements for hospital licensing and operations.

• Clarifies that hospital police officers may exercise their powers only on property owned, leased, or occupied by the hospital, including the physical plant, surrounding grounds, and satellite offices and facilities.

• Establishes the Indiana Health Care Facilities Task Force to study hospital and health facility licensure processes, review and update American Institute of Architects design guidelines, review and update National Fire Protection Association standards, and submit findings and recommendations to the governor and legislative council by August 31, 2018.

• Task force consists of seven members including the state health commissioner (chair), state fire marshal, and representatives from the Indiana Hospital Association, Indiana Health Care Association, American Institute of Architects (Indiana), Indiana Society for Healthcare Engineering, and other stakeholders; task force expires June 30, 2019.
