Father Edward Sorin and seven brothers from the Congregation of the Holy Cross founded the University of Notre Dame in St. Joseph County, Indiana in November 1842, traveling approximately 300 miles on foot from Vincennes, Indiana.

Notre Dame is consistently ranked among the top twenty universities in the United States and has advanced its position as a leading institution of higher education with contributions to research and scholarship.

In August 2017, Notre Dame will sponsor a pilgrimage retracing the footsteps of Father Sorin and his Holy Cross brothers to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the university's founding.

The Indiana General Assembly honors the University of Notre Dame on the occasion of its 175th anniversary.

The Secretary of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to Reverend John I. Jenkins of the University of Notre Dame.
