IN HB1339

Amends Indiana Code IC 36-2 to specify that county sheriff compensation must be fixed under either IC 36-2-13-2.5 or IC 36-2-13-2.8.

Creates new section IC 36-2-13-2.4 establishing that sheriff compensation shall be determined under one of two statutory provisions (sections 2.5 or 2.8 of chapter 13).

Modifies IC 36-2-13-2.8 to establish mandatory minimum annual salary requirements for sheriffs based on county population, ranging from 50% of the state prosecuting attorney minimum salary in counties with 20,000 or fewer residents to 100% in counties with more than 200,000 residents.

Allows counties paying sheriff compensation under section 2.8 to appropriate funds from the general fund for prisoner feeding, with restrictions preventing the sheriff or officers from making profits on the appropriation.

Becomes effective July 1, 2018.
