Gunner James Burnam was born July 14, 2003, to Tim and Jennifer Burnam and attended Brooklyn Elementary School in the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville.

Diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a rare pediatric brain cancer with less than 1 percent five-year survival rate, in December 2016 at age 13.

Underwent treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital while continuing his education and achieved the rank of First Class Scout in Boy Scout Troop 229.

Succumbed to DIPG on September 15, 2017, nearly nine months after diagnosis; his family and friends completed his planned Eagle Scout food drive project in October 2017, collecting more than 7,000 food items and earning the Boy Scout's Spirit of the Eagle Award.

Indiana General Assembly acknowledges Gunner's positive attitude while facing adversity and recognizes him as an inspiration for overcoming obstacles and an example of grace during daily struggles.
