Joe Mays, known as the "Peanut Man" in Gary, sold home-roasted peanuts at the corner of Grant Street and 25th Avenue for more than 50 years.

Former Mayor Rudy Clay renamed that corner "Joe Mays Corner" in his honor due to his widespread recognition in the community.

Performed entertainment acts including tricks for motorists, spinning tops on a string, balancing household objects on his chin, and juggling peanut bags into car windows.

Appeared on "Bozo's Circus" more than two dozen times and on "The Ted Mack Amateur Hour," plus performed at Harlem Globetrotters halftime shows, Gary holiday parades, the Bud Billiken Parade in Chicago, and various hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.

Worked full time at U.S. Steel as a crane assistant for 38 years and began his entertainment career while serving in the U.S. Army in the early 1950s.

Indiana House of Representatives thanks Joe Mays for his years of service and will transmit a copy of this resolution to him and his family.
