SB 359 Summary

• Eliminates the requirement for children under 18 years of age to obtain an employment certificate to work in Indiana, effective July 1, 2018.

• Repeals multiple Indiana Code sections (IC 20-33-3-5 through IC 20-33-3-20) that established the employment certificate system, including requirements for issuing officers, proof of age and employment, medical examinations, and certificate revocation procedures.

• Makes conforming amendments to election law (IC 3-6-6-39 and IC 3-11.5-4-23) to remove employment certificate requirements for minors serving as precinct election officers and absentee ballot counters.

• Removes employment certificate references from school withdrawal provisions (IC 20-33-2-28.5 and IC 20-33-2-28.6) and driver's license suspension statutes (IC 9-24-2-1).

• Transfers supervision of child labor violations from employment certificate enforcement to the bureau of child labor's general oversight of gainfully employed children under IC 22-1-1-5.
