SB 410 Summary

• Replaces the term "advanced practice nurse" with "advanced practice registered nurse" throughout the Indiana Code effective July 1, 2018.

• Expands the definition of "advanced practice registered nurse" to include nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, and certified registered nurse anesthetists who meet specific education and training requirements.

• Authorizes advanced practice registered nurses to prescribe legend drugs and controlled substances, subject to board-established requirements including national certification, graduate pharmacology coursework, and collaboration with a licensed physician.

• Permits advanced practice registered nurses to provide prenatal care, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and primary care services within their scope of practice, with reimbursement through Medicaid.

• Updates numerous Indiana Code sections to recognize advanced practice registered nurses in roles previously limited to physicians and physician assistants, including HIV testing, child restraint system certification, vehicle fitness reporting, and health care volunteer immunity provisions.
