St. Joseph High School baseball team won the Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A state championship on June 17, 2017, at Victory Field in Indianapolis, defeating Jasper 4-0.

The team finished with a 25-4 record, including an 11-1 mark in the Northern Indiana Conference, and this was their first appearance in the state championship game.

This was the first baseball state championship for a South Bend baseball team since 1970.

Senior pitcher Michael Dunkelberger pitched a complete game shutout allowing only three hits and two walks; senior shortstop Tony Carmola was named NIC Most Valuable Player; coach John Gumpf was named NIC Coach of the Year.

The Indiana General Assembly commends the student athletes for balancing their academic course load with extensive baseball practices and games, and the Secretary of the Senate shall transmit a copy of the resolution to Principal Susan Richter, Athletic Director Debbie Brown, and coach John Gumpf.
