First African American to serve on the Muncie Community Schools Board of Education (1970-1978) and first African American to represent his district in the Indiana House of Representatives (1978-1992)

Founding member of the Indiana Legislative Black Caucus and House sponsor of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day holiday bill

A life-size statue designed by artist Bill Wolfe has been commissioned by the Delaware County Historical Society to be placed in Muncie Fireman's Park in his honor
