Adrian Huizar, an eighth-grader at Queen of All Saints Catholic School in Michigan City, was named a 2019 State Honoree by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, selected from 29,000 young people nationwide

Huizar founded a tutoring program in 2017 that provides 45-minute tutoring sessions four days a week to students in first through sixth grades

The program has involved more than 60 students, tutors, and supervisors, with National Junior Honor Society members serving as tutors and adult volunteers supervising sessions

As State Honoree, Huizar receives a $1,000 award, engraved silver medallion, and trip to Washington, D.C., with eligibility for national awards of an additional $5,000 plus a $5,000 charitable grant

The Indiana House of Representatives formally congratulates and honors Huizar for his volunteer service, peer leadership, and contributions to education
