John Harkness, math and science teacher at West Washington High School in Campbellsburg, Indiana, received the 2018 Rural Teacher of the Year award from the Indiana Small and Rural Schools Association

Harkness holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Indiana University Southeast and has taught since 2003, instructing courses including Integrated Chemistry and Physics, AP Physics, Precalculus, Trigonometry, and Calculus

Prior to teaching, Harkness worked as an interpreter for the deaf for the state of Indiana, a receiving supervisor at Kimball Piano, and a preacher at local churches

Harkness was a finalist for the 2018 National Rural Education Association National Rural Teacher of the Year award
