James enlisted in 1942 as a torpedoman's mate first class, served on the U.S.S. Colhoun, and was severely injured during the Battle of Okinawa when Japanese forces bombed and sank the ship, killing 51 and wounding 18

Naomi was appointed as a Navy reserve nurse in 1943 and served in the Navy Nurse Corps at Great Lakes Naval Service, where she met James while caring for wounded servicemen

After the war, the couple married, settled in Princeton, Indiana, raised a family, and operated Beckner Jewelry Store

Secretary of the Senate directed to transmit a copy of the resolution to the Beckner family
