Both regions collaborate through the Conference of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers and the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Legislative Caucus on water, trade, and environmental issues

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region manages 20% of the world's surface fresh water, provides drinking water for over 40 million people, and constitutes an economic region equivalent to the world's third-largest economy
