Kautzman practiced law for 40 years at Ruckelshaus Kautzman Blackwell, specializing in state and federal criminal and civil litigation, trying more than 100 first chair jury trials

Received the National Fraternal Order of Police Attorney of the Year Award in 2023 for his career advocating for and defending police officers

Served as Indianapolis Bar Association president in 2005 and received the Luminary Award, the association's highest distinction

Elected to fellowship in the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honor limited to one percent of the state's lawyers
