School corporations in counties with populations under 150,000 receive a one-year window to sell closed school buildings to county or municipal governments at a mutually agreed price before being required to offer them to charter schools or state educational institutions

The one-year period begins when the governing body determines at a public meeting to cease using a covered school building for classroom instruction

If no sale to local government occurs within the one-year period, the school corporation must then make the building available for lease or purchase by charter schools or state educational institutions for $1

School corporations in counties with 150,000+ population must notify the state Department of Education within 30 days of deciding to close a building; those in smaller counties have 13 months
