As a coach, Blackmon led Fort Wayne Bishop Luers to state championships in 2008 and 2009, and led Marion to a Class 3A state championship in 2016 along with five sectional titles

Marion Community Schools Board voted on February 10, 2026, to rename the playing floor at Bill Green Athletic Arena the "James Blackmon Sr. Court"

Blackmon was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023 and his jersey number 24 is retired at Marion High School
