Adults age 18+ may enter into supported decision-making agreements to receive assistance with healthcare, financial, housing, and employment decisions from one or more designated supporters, as an alternative to guardianship or conservatorship

Supporters owe a fiduciary duty to the principal and may help access information, communicate decisions, and attend meetings, but cannot make decisions on the principal's behalf, sign documents for them, or exert undue influence

Agreements must be written, dated, and signed by both parties with either two witnesses or notarization; the judicial council will develop a standardized form

Third parties must recognize decisions made with supporter assistance as the principal's own decisions, with legal protections for good-faith reliance on or refusal of agreement terms

Violations of the act are added to K.S.A. 21-5417 as a basis for mistreatment charges against dependent adults or elder persons, with felony penalties scaled by financial harm amount
